Given the knowledge gap regarding persistent opioid use following hip fracture surgery, researchers of this Danish population-based cohort study sought to examine patients with and without opioid use prior to surgery, assessing them within a year subsequent to hip fracture surgery. They identified all patients undergoing primary hip fracture surgery in Denmark between 2005 and 2015 using the Danish Multidisciplinary Hip Fracture Database while assessing opioid use from The Danish National Health Service Prescription Database. The results indicated that the proportion of opioid users increased a year following hip fracture surgery in both groups, notably by 16.8% in the non-user before surgery group.
