Five-Year Prognosis and Impact of Adolescent Knee Pain: A Prospective Population-Based Cohort Study of 504 Adolescents in Denmark

A recent study sought to investigate the prognosis and impact of adolescent knee pain on health, care-seeking and career choices five years subsequent to diagnosis. In this population-based cohort of 2,200 adolescents aged 15-19 from 2011, 504 had reported knee pain on a monthly basis, and were evaluated along with 252 controls without knee pain. Study outcomes included pain frequency, knee-related and health quality of life, sports participation, the use of painkillers and impact on choice of job or career. According to the study results, four out of every 10 adolescents with knee pain continued experiencing frequent and intense knee pain five years later, and that the pain impacted their behaviors and career choices.
