Obesity in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is associated with elevated disease activity, poorer treatment impacts, and increased cardiovascular morbidity. According to recent findings, obese PsA patients could improve their disease activity with weight loss. Patients were treated with a very low energy diet (640kcal/day) for a minimum of 12 weeks (based on baseline body mass index). Patients saw improvements in almost all of the measured disease activity parameters, including 66/68 joints count, C-reactive protein, psoriasis body surface area, Leeds enthesitis index, HAQ, and patient visual analog scale score for global health, pain, and fatigue. Researchers observed an increasing trend for more weight loss and more disease improvement.
