Risk Factors for Anemia in CKD: Review and Meta-Analysis

By Victoria Socha - Last Updated: February 5, 2024

Anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has significant impact on patients, healthcare systems, and financial resources.  Ping Yin, MB, and colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the risk factors of anemia among patients with CKD.  The process was described online in Medicine [doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000027371].

The meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols statement. Studies were identified via systematic searches in September 2021 with no restrictions on date and time, or on publication status. The search included Embase, Medline, PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, and the Cochrane Library. The search terms were “anemia,” “risk factors,” “associated factors,” “chronic kidney injury,” “chronic kidney disease,” and “chronic renal insufficiency.”

The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the quality of each included study; the meta-analysis was conducted using STATA™ version 14 statistical software for Windows™. Results of the review and meta-analysis will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

“This meta-analysis may help policymakers and program managers design evidence-based interventions on preventing the occurrence of anemia with CKD patient populations,” the researchers said.
