Fresenius Medical Care, a leading provider of products and services for patients with renal diseases, announced a plan to prevent disruptions for patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) care from Fresenius Kidney Care Home in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
Damage to a Baxter International facility in western North Carolina, which manufactures much of the nation’s supply of sterile intravenous (IV) fluids and fluids for home kidney dialysis, is expected to impact renal care.
Fresenius will monitor and conserve supplies, adjust prescriptions, and use other suppliers to help mitigate potential shortages due to Helene. The company plans to ramp up production of PD and IV solutions by maximizing existing production capacity at its international sites.
Fresenius has a disaster response team in place for emergencies such as hurricanes and is equipped with fuel, generators, water tankers, and supplies to ensure patients in affected areas continue receiving necessary dialysis treatments, even during power outages or water disruptions. Fresenius also works closely with in-center and home-based patients before, during, and after storms to assess needs and provide emergency treatment guidance.
