As Obesity Increases in the U.S., So Do Cancer Diagnoses in Young Adults

A meta-analysis from researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine found that as obesity rates rise in young adults, so do cancer diagnoses. The study included 100 publications on animal studies, clinical trials, and public health data, defining young adults as those under 50 years.

Nine of the 20 most common cancers in the United States usually diagnosed after age 50 are now reported more frequently in younger adults, according to the findings. The review found that in 2016, one in four new cases of thyroid cancer and one in 10 new cases of breast cancer involved people between 20 and 44 years.
