TKA Outcomes in Patients With and Without Parkinson’s

Length of stay (LOS) and costs may be increased in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA) compared to patients without PD. For this study, researchers queried the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample for TKAs between 2000 and 2012. PD patients were matched 1:10 with patients who did not have PD based on age, sex, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and admission year. PD patients, compared to non-PD patients, had an increased mean LOS (3.92 vs. 3.71 days) and higher mean hospital charges ($41,523.52 vs. $40,657.00). Rates of in-hospital complication and mortality did not largely differ between the groups.
