Researchers for the retrospective KP-RHYTHM study sought to determine the association between atrial fibrillation (AF) burden in paroxysmal AF with ischemic stroke risk. They enrolled a cohort of 1,965 adults with paroxysmal AF and monitored ischemic stroke and other thromboembolic events. According to the results, the highest tertile of AF burden (≥11.4%) was associated with a more than 30fold higher risk for thromboembolism while not taking anticoagulants compared to the lower two tertiles of AF burden. The authors concluded that a greater AF burden was associated with a higher risk for ischemic stroke independent of known stroke risk factors in adults with paroxysmal AF.
