
Several individuals were recognized for their outstanding achievements and research in transplantation at the American Transplant Congress (ATC), held June 1-5 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Awards were bestowed on behalf of the American Society of Transplantation (AST), American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), and American Journal of Transplantation (AJT).
AST selected Allan Kirk, MD, PhD, FACS, for its highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Kirk is the David C. Sabiston, Jr. Distinguished Professor and chair of the Duke University Department of Surgery and surgeon-in-chief of the Duke University Health System. AST honored several others with achievement awards in various areas of advocacy, mentoring, and basic and clinical science.
ASTS gave the Pioneer Award to Igal Kam, MD, in recognition of his achievements in transplantation. Dr. Kam is a retired chief of transplantation and professor of surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a board member of the American Transplant Foundation.
In addition, ASTS provided 20 grants ranging from $5000 to $200,000 to PhD students, professors, doctors, and researchers. Meanwhile, AJT honored three individuals with the AJT Outstanding Authors Award in the categories of basic science, translational science, and clinical research.
