AAKP Honors Dr. Barry Smith With Excellence Award

The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) honored Barry Smith, PhD, MD, with its 2024 Medal of Excellence Award in the physician category. The news was announced during the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) in Baltimore, Maryland.

The AAKP is the oldest and largest independent kidney patient advocacy organization in the United States. It often collaborates with the RPA on national health and policy initiatives.

Dr. Smith received the award for his distinguished career in academia, government, and clinical care management and his dedication to expanding patient engagement in infection prevention and medical innovation. He is president of the Dreyfus Health Policy and Research Center in New York City, a nonprofit organization promoting health and wellness with a particular focus on community engagement. Previously, Dr. Smith served as deputy chief of surgical neurology at the National Institutes of Health, president and chief executive officer of the Rogosin Institute, and director of the Dreyfus Health Foundation. He currently serves as a member of AAKP’s national board of directors.
