Obesity remains a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) whether one is healthy or not, results from a new study published in The Lancet suggested. The authors looked at the association between metabolic health changes over time and the risk of cardiovascular disease across body mass index (BMI) categories. The study included survey data from 90,257 women who were followed between 1980 and 2010 for incident CVD. The researchers reported that that risk for CVD in women with metabolically healthy normal weight was lower than in those with metabolically unhealth normal weight. Additionally, women who maintained metabolically healthy obesity were at higher risk for CVD than those with stable healthy normal weight. The researchers noted that the risks for women with metabolically unhealthy weight were at elevated risk across all BMI categories.
