Patients with transient ischemic attack and a minor stroke within 2 to 5 years post-event face a slight risk of cardiovascular event similar to that of the one-year rate of reoccurrence or subsequent event in these individuals, a new study reported. In a population of 3,847 patients presenting with ischemic attack or minor stroke, 5-year follow-up data were obtained for 92.3% of the sample. The authors reported that 6.4% had events in the first year, and 6.4% had events in the subsequent 2 to 5 years. The reported rate of death (including causes such as cardiovascular event, intracranial hemorrhage, and major bleeding) was 10.6%.
