Update #1; Welcome to Ukraine
On February 24th, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, a sovereign nation. As of May 17th,
2022, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights documented
approximately 4,000 deaths (251 children) and 4,500 injured (382 children). A barbaric
invasion of unthinkable proportions, the United Nations has denounced the war as a
gross violation of the UN charter. Ukraine has identified over 10,000 potential war
crimes committed by Russia, and I hope, as I am sure you do, that Ukraine
prosecutes all 10,000 to the fullest extent of the law. The International Criminal Court
(ICC) is investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity because the Russian
military targeted civilians, civilian infrastructure, universities, and cultural centers.
Ukraine has prosecuted war crimes- this week, the first Russian soldier pleaded guilty
to war crimes, including the brutal murder of a 62-year-old man. This prosecution is
reassuring, and hopefully, more is to come.
