Testing for Respiratory Viruses in Adults With Severe Lower Respiratory Infection

Viral pathogens are often responsible for severe lower respiratory tract infections in adult patients, and research has greatly advanced the ability to identify viral infections. Outdated culture-based techniques have made way for multiplex high-throughput systems that have quickened this process. Advances in technology have created a need to reevaluate the role of respiratory viral testing in lower respiratory tract infection patients. The present report details the benefits of testing, describes the most common diagnostic techniques, and debates the need for routine testing based on the current literature.
