Is Foodborne Illness on the Rise?

Summertime brings a lot sand, surf, sun, and some of the best warm-weather foods and drinks. Unfortunately, an unexpected visitor might attend your next barbeque: foodborne illness. According to a report by CNN Health, the proportion of Americans at risk for foodborne illness is increasing

According to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, foodborne illness hits one in six Americans every year; the report also estimated that 48 million people get sick due to one or another of 31 pathogens.

According to the World Health Organization, almost 1 in 10 people are estimated to fall ill every year from eating contaminated food and 420,000 die from it. Although the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service’s job is to prevent foodborne illnesses and contamination, the frequent news of outbreaks have people worrying if these processes are adequately protecting the food supply.
